until i left hawaii for college. even though my mother and grandparents took great pride that they had voted for him, i confess that i wasn't paying much attention to the united states senate at the age of four or five or six. it wasn't until i was 11 years old that i recall even learning what a u.s. senator was or registering at least. it was during my summer vacation with my family, my first trip to what those of us in hawaii call the mainland, so we flew over the ocean, and with my mother and my grandmother and my sister who at the time was two, we traveled around the country. big trip. we went to seattle and we went to disney land which was most important, and we traveled to kansas where my grandmother's family was from, and went to chicago and went to yellowstone. we took greyhound buses most of the time and we rented cars and would stay in local motels or howard johnson's and if there was a pool at one of these motels, even if it was just tiny, i would be very excited and the ice machine was exciting and the vending machine, i was really excited about that, but this is at a time

the holidays in hawaii, his home state. do we know what, if anything, they are doing about that trip? >> reporter: that's not been announced yet, but since the congress is leaving, it would seem -- since the house of representatives, it would follow the president would go to hawaii for a period of time, would be my expectation. he could go sometime in the next few days, and then have christmas with his family, open the gifts in hawaii, and then come back shortly after christmas to try to cobble together a deal quickly before the new year, if that can be done. >> they've got until january 1st to do it. he was in the roosevelt room earlier in the day making a major announcement as well. tell our viewers about that. >> reporter: that's right. he used this opportunity to get one cabinet announcement under his belt. but he waited long enough to let -- it took long enough that susan rice first dropped out under pressure. that left john kerry as the last one standing and it's clear here at the white house the president and his aides expect kerry's confirmation to go very smoothly. you can e

. the president can step up and say hey, i don't want to go over the cliff. harry reid can come back from hawaii and actually go back to work. we can make that happen. we don't have to raise tacks on anyone. but what we know what we have to do is actually focus on the problem. and i think most americans are starting to understand, washington is trying to convince us that they're not taxing enough. everybody knows $1.3 trillion deficit is not a tax problem. >> congressman, again, i agree with you, but we also live, if you see "lincoln" or see what's happened over the past 200 years, we live in a divided government. that's our constitutional republic. and there are going to be tax increases. and if you do nothing, there are going to be tax increases on january the 1st. wouldn't you rather shape it than just let taxes go for everybody on january the 1st? >> that's a great question for december 31st. and that might happen. but again, where are the spending reductions? where are the entitlement reforms out of harry reid and the president of the yaunited states? i disagrees with boehner caving on taxe
